Johnny and Amber and "Histrionic Personality"

Though it's still in the DSM, histrionic personality disorder as a psychiatric diagnosis has fallen out of favor in American psychiatry. The diagnostic criteria for the disorder are vague and judgmental--not to mention sexist (the diagnosis gets applied almost exclusively to women).

The diagnosis started out in the DSM decades ago as "hysterical personality" and DSM IV and V have tried to sanitize the sexist connotations by switching the nomenclature to "histrionic" but problems remain and most psychiatrists now avoid assigning the diagnosis.

So it's not surprising that when the diagnosis came up recently in the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial, the media started reaching out to find out more about it.

I was fortunate enough to be contacted by Katie Heaney of New York Magazine, who turned our interview into a terrific on-line article in The Cut, the magazine. You can read it here.
